Meningococcal pericarditis in the absence of meningitis.

چکیده

A 16 year-old female presented with cardiac tamponade due to purulent meningococcal pericarditis without concomitant meningitis or meningococcaemia. She recovered after aspiration of the pericardial effusion and administration of a high dose of benzylpenicillin via a continuous infusion.

The case is described of an 18-year-old schoolboy who developed pericarditis during the course of meningococcal meningitis; he had evidence of a preceding chronic meningococcaemia. Good recovery followed on systemic antibiotics only. The pericarditis was probably a direct septic complication of meningococcal meningitis.

We report a case of cardiac tamponade in a child with meningococcal disease. Although purulent meningococcal pericarditis is more frequent in children, we found a reactive pericardial effusion responsive to steroids and consistent with a rare immune-complex associated pericardial involvement.
